Settling the Unsettled

“Settling the Unsettled” is a 40”x61” woodcut that I have been working on for the past few months for an event called BIGINK Prints. This is the largest and most ambitious piece of work I have made up to this point in my career and I am so proud of how it came out. The imagery is comprised of three different photographs pieces together and features an old photo of Sakonnet Light. The title, “Settling the Unsettled”, refers to our relationship to the sea. On a personal level, I find the ocean to be incredibly settling. I know that when I need to, I am able to allow myself to reflect upon some of my deepest thoughts when I am near ocean. The lighthouse is often seen as a symbol of hope, of comfort, and of security, especially to those who travelled the seas for days at a time. The ocean is always moving, never will you see the same wave or the same pattern in the water twice. This piece captures and holds on to one wave and one moment so that we may appreciate its beauty and take comfort in its presence in our lives.
